When your balance fails, you are in danger of falling.  A bad fall can cause an injury that can ultimately change your life.  Every 30 minutes someone over the age of 65 goes to the emergency room with a falling related injury.  Every 2 hours one of those people dies from complications due to the fall.  We are all concerned about disease (and we should be), but these statistics are frightening!  That’s why we work hard on relearning good balance when you are in the studio.

Balance is a motor skill and motor skills require practice to stay sharp.  If you feel your balance is not as good as it used to be, the good news is, that with practice, you can get it back.

One of my clients tripped and fell while she was on one of her bi-weekly hikes.  She broke her wrist.  The resulting recovery took 2 years!  To top it off, she was afraid to hike again.

We’ve been working hard on balance skills and recently she stepped in some salad dressing on the floor of a restaurant  and slipped very quickly.  She said she could feel her core muscles contract as she reached out for a chair and caught herself in the nick of time.  Stories like this remind me of why I love my job.
   (P.S. She’s hiking again.)

“Kim makes me feel welcome & understands my limitations and works with me on them.  I always feel safe with her and come away feeling good about what I’ve accomplished and what she has pushed me – gently – to achieve. She gets me to try new things, (standing on a bosu), that I didn’t think I could do!  And, she likes the over 50 age group to work with so you never feel ‘out of place’ because of your age.”
